Overview

Data analysts help a business see what is happening and decide what to do next. They pull the numbers together, check them and explain what they mean in plain terms. A good analyst saves a leadership team from guessing.

Consortia has recruited data analysts since 2010, on permanent and contract terms. The roles we cover range from reporting and insight analysts to product, marketing and commercial analysts, along with specialists brought in for a data migration or an audit. We also recruit the business intelligence and data science roles that sit alongside them.

How we recruit data analysts

Every analyst search begins with a question: what does the business want to know? An analyst improving a product, a marketing budget or a finance forecast needs different experience, even when the tools are the same. Agreeing that first tells us where to look.

Then the skills. SQL sits at the centre of most analyst roles, with Python or R for heavier statistical work and Power BI or Tableau for reporting. Experience with cloud data platforms is often valued too. We ask which of these the person will use every week, so the brief asks for what the job needs.

AI tools are changing the work. They can write a query or draft a chart in seconds, so more of an analyst's value lies in checking the answer and explaining it. We ask candidates to talk us through a piece of analysis that changed a decision, and how they made sure the numbers were right.

We also look at fit: how someone works with people outside the data team, and whether the role offers the path they want. Many analysts move on to analytics management, data science or data engineering, and it helps to know that at the start. Most of our analyst hires come through direct approaches. We recruit across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which kind of data analyst do we need?

It depends on the decisions you want to improve. Product analysts work on how customers use the product. Marketing analysts focus on acquisition, campaigns and attribution. Commercial or finance analysts look at pricing, revenue and performance. Insight analysts often combine data with customer research. The skills overlap, but domain experience helps someone become useful faster.

Is SQL enough, or should a data analyst know Python?

SQL is the core skill for almost every analyst role. Python or R becomes more useful when the work involves statistics, automation, larger datasets or experimentation. For reporting-focused roles, strong SQL and a visualisation tool may be all you need. Asking for Python where it will not be used narrows the pool without much benefit.

How do you assess a data analyst beyond technical tests?

We ask candidates to talk through an analysis that changed a decision, and how they explained it to people without a data background. We also ask how they checked the data was right before sharing it. Analysts who can turn numbers into a clear recommendation tend to be far more useful than those who only produce the numbers.

Should we hire data analysts on contract or permanently?

Contract analysts suit defined work: a reporting backlog, a system migration, a one-off analysis or cover during a busy period. Permanent analysts suit ongoing roles embedded in a team, where understanding the business builds value over time. We recruit on both terms.
