Overview

AI product management needs the usual product skills, plus real experience of putting AI into products.

The product managers in highest demand have integrated AI into an existing product. Rarer still, and hardest to find, are those who have shipped native AI features or built AI-native products from scratch.

Less rare, and useful where AI is part of the role rather than the point of it, are product managers who use AI in their own workflows or have worked with AI features inside their products.

Technical background is not the deciding factor. A strong product manager from a UX background who knows how to embed AI natively into a product is as valuable as one who understands the models. Which you need depends on the role, and we agree that with you before we assess anyone.

Where a role requires AI experience, we make sure it is extensive. A line on a CV is not enough.

How we recruit AI product managers

Job titles in AI product vary. AI product manager, AI product owner and machine learning product manager can describe much the same job, which makes salary benchmarking harder and CV screening less reliable. So we look at what each person has shipped, how they measured whether it worked, and what they did when it got things wrong.

On a small AI team, a CV rarely shows who designed what. We ask candidates what they decided themselves and what the engineers built.

We also ask how they handle data and mistakes. Who can see the data? How are answers checked before a user sees them? What happens when the model is wrong? Many AI product managers now build their own prototypes with AI tools, so we ask what they would still hand to an engineer.

From the candidate side we make sure they find out what the job description might leave out such as team size, how involved leadership will be, days in office etc.

You might need a permanent hire, a contractor for a project or a senior leader for a few days a week. Either way, we start by understanding the nuances of the role and how it will work with your team.

AI Product Manager recruitment insights

Demand for AI product managers has picked up, and the candidates we speak to feel it. Several mention regular approaches over recent months, so a business that finds the right person is rarely the only one talking to them.

Their reasons for moving are consistent. Some are a team of one, with AI treated as a support function rather than part of the product. Others sit in large organisations where adoption is slowed by silos, regulation or a change of ownership. Many want to own a product again and take it from discovery into production.

Clients increasingly want one person who can shape product direction and make sound technical calls. Product managers who prototype with AI coding tools are more common than they were. The better ones are clear that understanding the architecture, the data and the risks matters more than writing the code.

For AI-first platform roles, some clients now put AI experience ahead of sector knowledge, on the basis that an industry can be learned faster. Those who accept that, and move quickly once they find the right person, tend to see a wider shortlist.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI product manager need experience in our industry?

Not always. For AI-first platform roles, some clients now put AI product experience ahead of sector knowledge, because an industry can often be learned faster than hands-on AI experience. Sector depth still matters in heavily regulated settings, where the rules shape what the product can do. Being open on this point usually widens the shortlist.

How can you tell whether a candidate has really built AI products?

We ask what they shipped, how they measured whether it worked and what happened when it did not. We separate what they designed themselves from what the engineers around them built. We also ask how they handled evaluation, edge cases and checking outputs before they reached users. People with real experience tend to answer with specifics.

Do AI product managers need to code?

Not usually, though many now build quick prototypes with AI coding assistants. That can speed up discovery and make conversations with engineers more concrete. The stronger candidates are clear that understanding the architecture, the data and the risks matters more than writing production code. We ask how they scope prototype work and what they would still hand to an engineer.

Should we hire an AI product manager on a permanent or contract basis?

More companies are now hiring AI product managers permanently, having accepted that the need is not going away. Contract can still suit a defined piece of work, such as a pilot or a first proof of concept, where the longer-term shape of the team is unclear. If you are unsure which applies, we can talk it through before the search starts.
