Overview

Research is what stops a team building the wrong thing well. Consortia recruits UX and user researchers who run interviews, test concepts and turn what they learn into decisions a product team will act on.

Some teams want a dedicated researcher who leads discovery and supports several product teams at once. Others need a designer who can carry research as part of the role, and our product designers page covers that hire. Where the job is to build and lead a research team, see UX leaders.

We recruit UX researchers across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE, through both Permanent Recruitment and Contract Recruitment. Defence and government projects remain a steady source of research roles, and many of them ask for security clearance.

How we recruit UX researchers

Research roles usually open for a specific reason. A researcher is going on leave, a product team has nobody testing its ideas, or a design studio needs an audit done in a few weeks. That reason shapes the hire, so it is the first thing we ask about, along with the methods the work needs: interviews and usability testing, surveys and usage data, or a mix.

In regulated work, sector experience matters more. A researcher who knows how people use banking, health or government services will get to useful questions sooner, and already understands the rules the product has to meet. Where a client needs that, we look for it, along with case studies that show a product decision the research changed.

Contract research is mostly remote, so time zones matter as much as location. A team in Europe will want working hours that overlap with its own. When the hire is cover for a researcher on leave, we aim to time the start so the two overlap for a handover. Day rate and availability are agreed on the first call.

Researcher interviews tend to be short: a conversation with the researcher already in the team, then one with the wider product team. We send a small shortlist, each with a CV and examples of their work. For permanent roles, salary, office days and notice period are settled before anyone is introduced.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What background should a UX researcher have?

Strong researchers come from many routes, including psychology, human-computer interaction, anthropology, market research and design. The background matters less than their grasp of methods, their ability to plan sound studies and how well they turn findings into decisions. Different backgrounds bring different strengths, so we match to what your product needs.

Do we need a qualitative or a quantitative researcher?

Most product teams start with qualitative research, such as interviews and usability testing, to understand why people behave as they do. Quantitative research, such as surveys and analysis of usage data, helps measure how widespread a behaviour is. Many researchers work across both. If the role leans heavily one way, say so in the brief.

How can we tell whether a researcher's work has influenced decisions?

Ask what changed as a result of their research. Strong researchers can point to product decisions, priorities or designs that shifted because of what they found. They can also explain how they shared findings so teams acted on them. Research that stays in a slide deck is a common frustration for researchers and employers alike.

What is research operations, and do we need it?

Research operations covers the practical side of research: recruiting participants, managing consent and incentives, choosing tools and keeping findings organised so they can be reused. It tends to become worth a dedicated role once several researchers, or many teams, are running studies. Before that, researchers usually handle it themselves.
