Overview
A product designer looks after how a product works for the people using it, from the first idea to what ships. They shape the problem with product managers, map how people will move through it, design the screens and test them with users. They stay close to engineers while it is built, and return to it once real usage shows what to improve.
That range is what sets the role apart. Most product designers combine user experience, interface design and some research, and many now use AI tools to prototype and test ideas faster. Where a team needs a specialist in one part of the work, our UX and design and UX researchers pages cover those hires.
Consortia recruits product designers from senior to lead and founding roles, on permanent and contract terms across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.
How we recruit product designers
The company's stage will set the foundations of the brief. A start-up making its first design hire needs someone who can work without a design team and set up a design system. A scale-up adding to an established team may need someone who can slot into how that team already works.
Finding a strong portfolio is a given, and it is where the search starts. We look for work on a similar kind of product and a clear account of the designer's own part in it. Most clients then set a short design task. It shows how a designer works through a problem, and where AI tools come into their process.
Contract product designers are mostly remote, and often join to cover a gap or bring a design system together. Permanent roles range from one office day a week to four, so office days are discussed early alongside salary and notice periods. Most strong product designers are in work, so we approach them directly.

Product Designer recruitment insights
Product design hiring has become more senior and broader. Demand is stronger for senior designers than for junior ones. Most hiring managers also want designers who are comfortable with AI tools, and visual polish still ranks highly.
Designers are also moving closer to code. More designers now do some development work, and some companies expect designers to put changes live themselves.
That raises a question for each hire: which matters most out of craft, product thinking and the ability to build? Few people are equally strong at all three, and a brief that ranks them usually leads to a better shortlist.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Should we set a design task in the interview process?
Most clients do, and a short task set on a problem close to the real role works best. It shows how a designer frames a problem and handles trade-offs, and where AI tools come into their process. Long unpaid assignments tend to put off experienced designers.
When should we move from generalist product designers to specialists?
Usually as the team and product grow. Early on, a broad product designer covering UX, UI and some research gives the most value. As the product matures, gaps tend to appear in areas such as research, interaction design, visual design or design systems. Hiring specialists at that point helps raise quality where generalists are stretched.
How closely should product designers work with engineers?
Very closely. The strongest product designers involve engineers early, understand technical constraints and stay involved after handover to see what actually ships. Shared design systems and regular conversations cut rework. We ask candidates how they have worked with engineering teams, and what happened when a design had to change during build.
Do product designers need to be able to code?
Not usually. Understanding how interfaces are built helps designers make realistic decisions and talk well with engineers. Some designers now prototype in code or with AI tools, which can speed up testing ideas. For most roles it is a useful extra, not a requirement, unless the role leans towards design engineering.
