Overview

AI tools are helping teams build faster, often with fewer people. That means many roles now stretch across front end and backend work.

Full stack developers, or full stack engineers as many teams call them, work on the parts users see and the systems behind them. The title can still mean different things from one company to another. Some roles lean more towards front end work. Others need someone comfortable across the whole product.

We also see briefs change once the real need becomes clearer. A role may start as product engineering or front end but in fact turn out to be full stack requirement.

Consortia recruits full stack developers on permanent and contract terms across the UK, Europe, the US and UAE.

How we recruit full stack developers

The first thing we pin down on a full stack brief is where the weight sits. One full stack JavaScript role may need much stronger backend skills. Another may lean heavily towards Java, with some Angular alongside it. We confirm the split with the hiring manager, then test candidates against it.

We then look at what candidates have done in real jobs. Someone who has built front ends but only tried backend work in side projects is a different hire. We ask for examples from both areas, and how recently they have done that work.

Often full stack roles sit in early-stage companies, where engineers cover architecture, delivery and sometimes hiring. We are open with candidates about what that involves: funding stage, likely hours and how much leadership the role carries. Engineers who have been through a start-up that ran out of money will ask about runway, and we make sure we can answer.

Salary, notice, location and working pattern are agreed early. When a candidate is strong but wrong for the role in front of us, we keep them in mind for other engineering searches across the team.

Full Stack Developer recruitment insights

In the UK, full stack developer has held steady as a job title, and pay has barely moved in three years.

What has changed is seniority. More of the full stack roles we work on are now senior, lead or principal hires. Across software roles in the US, most job adverts are now for senior positions, and very few are entry level. Junior developers are also more likely than seniors to say the job market is hard.

Many teams now want something closer to a product engineer: someone who can build a feature from start to finish and make sensible calls about what is worth building. AI tools make it easier to work across the whole product. They also make it easier to look broader than you are.

Few of these roles are an even split. Most of the full stack briefs we see lean towards the backend.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How should we describe a full stack role so the right people apply?

Say where the weight sits. Is it mostly interface work, mostly services and data, or a real mix? Name the core stack, what the person will own end to end and how much infrastructure or deployment is involved. Vague full stack descriptions attract a wide range of people and make the right match harder to spot.

What is the difference between a full stack developer and a product engineer?

Full stack describes technical breadth: working across the interface, services and deployment. Product engineer describes ownership: talking to users and making decisions about what to build. One person can be both. Many roles we see as product engineering are full stack in practice, so we assess for both where the brief needs it.

Which full stack skills are most in demand?

In the briefs we see, the strongest demand is for modern JavaScript and TypeScript stacks, often with React on the front end and Node.js or Python behind it. Cloud and data experience are increasingly expected alongside. The exact mix varies by team, so we focus on what the role needs rather than a long list of technologies.

Can a full stack developer also handle infrastructure?

Some can. Many are comfortable deploying through managed cloud services and setting up build and release pipelines. More complex infrastructure, such as large-scale networking, reliability or security, usually needs a specialist. If infrastructure is a big part of the job, it is worth saying so clearly in the brief.
