Overview

Permanent hiring has become more selective. Teams are smaller, budgets are watched closely, and each new hire carries more weight than it did a few years ago. When a business does commit to a permanent role, getting the right person first time matters a great deal.

We have made permanent hires for technology teams since 2010, and much of that work is a result of long relationships. People we placed early in their careers now run teams of their own, and many have been hiring through us for more than a decade.

Our consultants specialise by discipline across Product, UX, Data and Engineering. The person running your search already knows the market, the salary expectations and many of the people in it.

Discuss your permanent hiring

When permanent is the right choice

Permanent makes sense when the work is ongoing and the role sits close to the centre of the product: the engineer who will own a platform, the product manager setting direction for a team, the designer building a function from its first hire. Knowledge in these roles builds over time, and losing someone after a year sets the whole team back.

Other routes are sometimes the better call. If the work is a defined project or cover for a set period, Contract Recruitment is usually quicker. For senior appointments or especially hard-to-fill roles, Executive Search gives the search more time and depth. If you need senior input a few days a week, Fractional Leadership may suit you better. We will tell you if we think a role would work better another way.

Ways to hire

Other ways to hire

  • Executive Search

Retained search for technology leaders and hard-to-find specialists.

  • Contract Recruitment

Day-rate and fixed-term specialists for projects, change programmes and interim cover.

  • Fractional Leadership

Fractional leadership for growth, change and key priorities.

Permanent recruitment with Consortia

We start with the person the hire will report to. Job specs are often written by someone else, and the detail that matters most can get lost on the way: why the role is open, what it needs to deliver in the first year, and which parts of the spec really count.

Then we go looking. Many of the people we put forward were not applying for jobs. We approach them directly and talk honestly about salary, notice period, office days and their reasons for moving before anyone reaches your inbox.

You see a short list, with our reasons for each person. We stay involved once an offer is made, through notice periods, counter-offers and the first months in the role.

The team really listen to the needs and contexts of the roles I hire for. They take time to understand how this translates to individual candidates and only put forward serious good fits.

Market insights· Updated July 2026

Permanent recruitment insights

Two kinds of company are still hiring permanently in 2026. The first is building with AI and bringing new features to market. The second has accepted it lacks the skills in-house, and is hiring AI product managers and AI engineers permanently rather than on contract. A third group is growing: established software companies, often newly funded or acquired, turning a bespoke service into a SaaS platform and hiring to do it.

The market splits by geography. The US continues to hire aggressively, paying $300,000 to $400,000 for the most in-demand roles where equity is not part of the package. The UK is quieter. Leadership salaries have come down over the last year and junior roles have largely disappeared, so mid-level people move sideways rather than up. European hiring holds up, much of it remote roles for UK, US and UAE businesses.

Speed is where processes fail. Everyone is fishing in the same small pool of strong candidates, and offers move faster than most hiring teams expect. Waiting to see one more candidate is how the person already in process gets lost.

Candidates have shifted on hybrid too. At mid-senior level, many now want two or three days in the office, which shrinks the search radius. Pushing to four or five days limits who will consider the role.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should this role be permanent or contract?

Permanent usually makes sense when the work is ongoing and the role sits at the centre of the product. Contract suits a defined project, cover, or a skill you need for a set period. More companies are now hiring AI engineers and AI product managers permanently for this reason. They have accepted the need is not going away. If a role would be better as a contract or fractional hire, we will say so.

How long does a permanent hire take?

It depends on the role, the location and your interview process. We usually have a shortlist with you within three to five days of the brief. From shortlist to accepted offer, the median is around 46 days, and it can be as quick as ten. Most of that time sits with the hiring side: how urgent the role feels, how many people need to agree, and how quickly feedback comes back. Some companies take two weeks to give feedback after a single interview. Strong candidates are usually talking to more than one company in that time. Agreeing stages, decision-makers and feedback times at the start is the simplest way to avoid losing someone late.

How has AI changed interviews for permanent tech roles?

Quickly. Until recently, many clients did not want AI used in interviews at all. Engineering interviews now often ask candidates to show how they work with coding agents and how they check that work. Some regulated environments remain more cautious. Take-home tasks are harder to judge, because AI tools can produce a polished result fast. Asking candidates to talk through and defend their work live usually tells you more.

What happens if our preferred candidate gets a counter-offer?

Counter-offers are not a major issue in most searches right now, with one exception. People who already use AI well in their current role are often underpaid for what they now deliver. When they resign, some employers respond with a late counter-offer. We raise that risk early, so motivation and salary are discussed before an offer is made. In our experience, accepting a counter-offer rarely works out in the long run.

Can you hire permanently outside the UK?

Yes. We run permanent searches across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE, and each market behaves differently. The US is still hiring actively, while the UK is more cautious. A lot of European hiring is remote roles for UK, US and UAE businesses. In the UAE, strong local tech talent is scarce, so searches often look abroad. We benchmark every search against its own local market.
