Overview

A product marketer is often hired when a product has outgrown the way it is explained. A launch is coming, the company is moving into a new market, or sales teams have started describing the product in different ways. Fixing that means settling who the product is for, why it matters and how it reaches buyers.

Consortia is a specialist product marketing recruiter for B2B and B2C tech companies. We recruit product marketing managers, senior and principal product marketers, and Heads of Product Marketing. Some join an established team. Others are the first product marketer a business has hired.

How we recruit product marketers

Product marketing overlaps with product management, content and growth marketing and, in some businesses, pricing. A brief that mixes them tends to attract the wrong applicants. Where that happens we say so early, and sometimes the title or the brief changes before the search begins.

Next we look at who a candidate has marketed to. A product marketer who has sold to security teams, finance teams or software developers brings knowledge that takes time to build. For technical products we ask to see work written for that audience.

We ask what a candidate personally built, who they worked with in product and sales, and what changed as a result. Someone from a large team may have owned one part of the work, so we check how much they have done on their own.

The practical points are covered on the first call: location and time zones, office days and travel, salary, notice period and reasons for moving. Redundancies have been common in product marketing, so we ask about short stints and freelance periods and don't assume.

Most of the product marketers we place are approached directly. Where a local search is thin, we talk to the client early about widening the location or the level of experience. We recruit product marketers on permanent and contract terms across the UK, Europe, the US and the UAE.

Product Marketing recruitment insights

Most of the product marketing hires we work on are at fast-growing scale-ups, and most of those sell software to other businesses. The hire often comes at a point of change: a move from smaller customers to enterprise accounts, entry into a new market, or a launch.

Sector knowledge often plays a large role in creating a shortlist. Many clients want someone who already knows their market, whether that is cyber security, fintech or developer tools. Product marketers who want to change sector can find it hard, even with a strong record elsewhere.

Technical product marketing is where the pool is thinnest. Explaining a product to software developers is a rare skill. Clients hiring for it will often accept someone from a different industry who has done it before.

Many of these roles are for a first or sole product marketer. That person writes the positioning and messaging from a blank page, then produces the launch material and sales content themselves, which tends to suit people from smaller companies. Some senior candidates would prefer to lead a team, so it helps to be clear early about how hands-on the role is.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between product marketing and product management?

A product manager decides what gets built and why. A product marketer decides how the product is positioned, who it is for and how it reaches the market. The two work closely, and searches often stall when a role mixes their responsibilities. We help settle where the line sits before the search starts.

Do we need B2B or B2C product marketing experience?

Usually one or the other. B2B product marketing leans on buyer research, positioning against competitors and equipping sales teams for long buying decisions. B2C leans on pricing, acquisition, lifecycle messaging and brand. Some people move between them well, but the experience is rarely interchangeable. The brief should be clear about which one matters.

When should we hire our first product marketer?

Common triggers include a major launch, a move into a new market, sales teams describing the product in different ways, or a product that ships faster than customers can understand it. A first product marketer needs to be comfortable doing the research, the positioning and the launch work themselves, without a wider team.

Where should product marketing sit in the organisation?

It can work under product or under marketing. What matters more is that the product marketer has close, regular contact with both the product team and the sales team. If they are cut off from product decisions, positioning tends to lag. If they are cut off from sales, it can lose touch with what buyers actually ask.
